The book focuses on a futuristic North America, ruled by the capitol whom take joy in holding a annual hunger games; this year being the 74th. Each year two tributes (one male and one female) from the 12 districts of padem get chosen by random lottery style to take part in what is basically a brutal fight to the death in a arena which consists of lakes, forests and mountains or any other scenery of choice.
Katniss Everdeen the main protagonist in this series volunteers in the place of her sister, Primrose who was picked at random, before leaving the district Katniss makes a promise to Prim, to try and survive.
Along with Peeta Mellark (the other tribute), Katniss is taken to the capitol, where makes sure where she and Peeta are to be mentored by Haymitch, an alcoholic and a previous hunger games victor, where they are trained and tested on their skill and to test their ability and skill, each tribute from each district, are tested by capitol members and are giving a score to determine their odds by those who sponsor. To have a bigger chance of survival, and get people to sponsor them with gifts, Haymitch devises a plan to portray Katniss and Peeta as cross star lovers though to Peeta it's hardly a 'portrayal'.
But if you're not one for romance, don't not read it, because there is twice as much 'hunger games action' and actual conversations which do not make you want to facepalm yourself repeatedly unlike some books *cough cough twilight cough*. Sorry twihards.
If you want to know the whole story; you'll have to read the book but you could just be lazy and watch the film; but I recommend the book as they are always so much better, that's a fact!
Needless to say; I'm glad I read it again.
It really makes you think 'what if this was real?' If there was a hunger games?'. To summarise this a excellent and enthralling books which is a definite read.
The best thing about the hunger games is that it's trilogy! Two more books to review! Wooop!
In the words of terminator:
I'll be back, unless I happen to get picked as a tribute
Lizzy!
